LUCID Excerpt: Shadows

LUCID: ShadowShadows
The Shadows are beings of darkness, with unknown origin and seemingly evil intent. Their numbers are not known, but it is believed there is approximately one Shadow for every hundred humans on Earth. They are able to sense active Dreamers, and track them down through dreams and dreaming reality. Their goal is not entirely known, but it is known that any Dreamer that falls prey to the Shadows vanishes, and is never seen again. For some reason, Shadows are unable to “take” Dreamers who are merely dreaming, and must wait to interact until the Dreamer enters the Dreaming Reality.

Shadows are formless beings of darkness that prowl dreams and steal away Dreamers. When they assume vaguely humanoid shapes, they are the size of humans, but with very distorted proportions. Most commonly, they cluster together, appearing as little more than a writing mass of darkness.

Despite having no true “shape,” a Shadow effectively has the same body locations as a human, and is affected in the same way by injuries and wound penalties.

*Dream Sense: A Shadow’s highly developed dream senses provide a +4 bonus to all Dream Sense checks.

*Hiding: Shadows gain a +4 bonus to all Hiding checks (incorporated into their skill entry). In areas of darkness, they gain an additional +4.

*Invulnerability: Shadows are impervious to normal damage (most attacks simply pass through a Shadow’s body as if it were made of mist), and can only be harmed by the powers of a Dreamer or ESPer, and some specially-created weapons or other items. Otherwise, no physical damage or weapon can harm them.

*Regeneration: Shadows regenerate damage at a rate of 1 per turn to all damaged body areas.

*Weakness to Light: Shadows suffer damage from bright light, such as direct sunlight, as if it were fire. All exposed areas suffer 1d4 damage per turn of exposure. Unlike traditional vampires, Shadows are not harmed by indirect light, and can freely move through any shadowy area even during the day.
